Johnny Óg Connolly

Thosaigh Johnny Óg Connolly ag seinm ceoil ar an mbosca nuair a bhí sé naoi mbliana d’aois. Óna athair, Johnny Óg Connolly a rugadh in Inis Bearachain agus ó Mhicheál Mheáirt Ó Coisdealbha a thug sé leis cuid mhór dá chuid ceoil. Chuaigh ceol Joe Burke agus Andy McGann i bhfeidhm go mór air freisin. Nuair a bhí sé ceithre bliana déag chaith sé tamall ag seinm leis an ngrúpa ceoil Na hAncairí. Thug an ceol ar fud na cruinne é agus sa mbliain 2003 shocraigh sé síos i gCois Fharraige. Is cumadóir ceoil chomh maith é agus tá sraith dlúthdhioscaí foilsithe aige. Orthu seo tá Aisling Yoshua (Joshua’s Dream) a foilsíodh 2011 agus a bhain an ‘Irish Times Ticket Award’ amach don albam ceol tradisiúnta is fearr. I gcuimhne ar a athair ceann de na dlúthdhioscaí uaidh Fear Inis Bearachain a foilsíodh in 2016 agus é ag seinm ar an mileoidean, uirlis ar mhol a athair dhó a dhul ina bhun. Chum Johnny Óg ceol dar teideal ‘An Cosán Draíochta’ a cuireadh ar an ardán an chéad uair nuair a hosclaíodh Stiúideo Cuan in sa Spidéal mí na Samhna 2021. Thugadh muintir Inis Bearachain ‘Cosán Draíochta’ ar an gcosán gainimh a cheanglaíodh an Inis leis an mórthír le linn lag trá.

Johnny Ó Connolly began playing music on the accordion when he was nine years old. He learned a great deal of his music from his father Johnny Connolly, from the Conamara island of Inis Bearachain and from Micheál Mheáirt Ó Coisdealbha. He was also greatly influenced by musicians Joe Burke and Andy McGann. Aged fourteen, he spent some time playing with the Conamara group Na hAncairí. His music has brought Johnny Óg across the world and in 2013 he settled in Conamara. He is also a composer and he has released a number of compact discs. These include Aisling Yoshua (Joshua’s Dream) published in 2011 which won the Irish Times ticket award for the best traditional album. His CD Fear Inis Bearachain was published in memory of his father and on this CD Johnny Óg plays the melodeon, an instrument his father encouraged him to play. A work was commissioned entitled An Cosán Draíochta (The Magic Path) which premiered at the opening of Stiúideo Cuan in An Spidéal in November 2021. Cosán Draíochta was the name the islanders gave the path that appeared during low tide from Inis Bearachain to the mainland.
